Farming for the future - Ecological Recycling Agriculture to save the Baltic Sea

26.02.13

EU project BERAS Implementation invites you to the conference Farming for the future - Ecological Recycling Agriculture to save the Baltic Sea. This is an opportunity to discuss how we can develop organic agriculture and thereby contribute to sustainability. The program includes lectures, workshops and great possibilities to network and present your organization to other key stakeholders.

When? February 26-27, 2013
Where? Hotel Euroopa, Tallinn, Estonia

For whom? Farmers' organizations, advisors, certifying bodies, NGOs and decision maker

Organic agriculture has the potential to save the environment of the Baltic Sea through decrease of nutrient leakages and pesticides. It also contributes to soil fertility, biodiversity, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through low input of external resources and by carbon sequestration. By including the whole food chain from farmer to consumer in local networks we may achieve even greater positive climate effects and additionally contribute to rural development.
Still, the conversion to organic agriculture is too slow in relation to regional and global environmental threats. Even if the amount of organic arable land and the consumption of organic products have increased in the Baltic Sea region, organic practices are also questioned when it comes to their ability to feed the world and their positive environmental impact.
To realize the systemic shift we need to strengthen the position of organic agriculture and, at the same time, further develop organic agricultural practices.
